Vascular ultrasound (Doppler) of the lower extremities

What is ultrasound of the vessels of the lower extremities?

Ultrasound of the vessels of the lower extremities (dopplerography) is the most informative, painless and accessible type of diagnosis, which can reveal various vascular pathologies, as well as assess the condition of the arteries, veins and blood flow in general. The ultrasound examination procedure is painless, has no contraindications and age restrictions.
During the ultrasound of the vessels of the lower extremities, the condition is examined:
• iliac vein;
• large and small saphenous veins;
• femoral, popliteal veins;
• deep veins of the leg;
• external vena cava.

You can undergo an ultrasound examination of the vessels of the lower extremities at any time. Preparation for this procedure consists in standard hygiene measures: neither lifestyle changes nor adherence to a special diet is required.

For whom is ultrasound of the vessels of the lower extremities indicated?

It is recommended to undergo this diagnosis if there are such complaints:
 quick fatigue when walking;
 pain or a feeling of heaviness in the legs;
 high sensitivity to cold;
 pronounced vascular network;
 recurring feeling of numbness;
 blue fingers;
 dry and peeling skin on the legs;
 severe unreasonable itching;
 other types of local discomfort, including swelling, tingling, etc .;
 cramps of the calf muscles, feet;
 ulcers and other skin problems in the lower leg area;
 in the presence of varicose veins;
 with a genetic predisposition to varicose veins;
 before planning a pregnancy;
 with prolonged use of hormones (contraceptives).
Also, it is recommended to do Doppler ultrasonography for such diseases:
 arterial stenosis (narrowing of the vascular lumen);
 atherosclerosis (plaque formation);
 endarteritis, etc.

How is ultrasound of the vessels of the lower extremities done?

Before starting the procedure, the patient takes off his clothes from his feet: pants, tights, socks and all that is superfluous. To ensure good skin contact with the ultrasound emitter, the surface of the leg is lubricated with a special gel. The ultrasound sensor moves along the vessels, and an ultrasonogram appears on the screen of the device - an image showing arterial and venous vessels and the process of blood movement through them. Doppler ultrasonography of the vessels of the lower extremities takes on average 15-20 minutes, it is harmless to the body, and therefore does not have any restrictions on the timing of repeated conduct. The results obtained during the study are saved in the clinic's database, and a printed version of the ultrasound protocol with an ultrasonogram (snapshot) attached to it, if necessary, is provided to the patient. Ultrasound data are considered reliable within 30 days.

Advantages of ultrasound of the vessels of the lower extremities

  •  Highly qualified medical staff.
  •  Diagnostic and treatment equipment from the world's leading manufacturers.
  •  The results of the procedure are issued 15-20 minutes after the examination. Electronic versions of the received data are stored in our database.

The result of Doppler ultrasonography of the vessels of the lower extremities

Ultrasound of the vessels of the lower extremities reveals the following diseases:
1. Varicose veins - a pathology that leads to stagnation of blood in the veins. In an advanced case, trophic ulcers may occur.
2. Thrombophlebitis - inflammation and blockage of superficial veins by a thrombus.
3. Phlebothrombosis - inflammation and blockage of a deep vein thrombus.
4. Thrombosis - a pathological condition in which blood clots form, blocking the lumen of the vein and interfering with normal blood flow.
5. Atherosclerosis is a disease that leads to deposition of cholesterol plaques and fats on the walls of blood vessels, after which the venous walls lose elasticity, thicken, and the vessel lumen narrows.
6. Oncological pathologies affecting the functioning of blood vessels.
In addition, during the procedure, the doctor will assess the anatomical structure and tortuosity of blood vessels, the condition of their walls, as well as their elasticity.
